How Often Should You Have Your Chimney Swept?

While there isn’t a set formula for how often you should have your chimney cleaned, you should schedule an annual chimney inspection, especially if you are a regular fireplace user.

During a chimney inspection, your technician can ascertain whether your chimney system is in need of a more thorough chimney inspection and/or cleaning and chimney repair. Other venting systems for heating oil, natural gas, coal, and pellet burning appliances have to be maintained, as well.

For example, even without the presence of soot, gas fireplaces can still experience fire hazards from the presence of bird nests or other obstructions. As with other home repair issues, the longer an issue stays untreated, the more extensive the damage can become. Avoiding an inspection could turn an undiscovered issue into a large repair project, or even worse, a chimney fire.

If you have recently purchased a home, especially an older one, or if your home has experienced environmental damage such as an earthquake or hurricane, your chimney is even more likely to be in need of a chimney sweeping and/or a chimney repair. Most regular fireplace users prefer to schedule an annual cleaning to keep their system in the best working order.

  After our 110 year old farm house was damaged by a tornado I contacted Alex with Emberstone.  He came out quickly to look at our two damaged chimneys one of which was completely down to the roofline.  Knowing that our roof could not be repaired until the chimneys where, he and his crew came on a weekend to do the repairs as soon as possible.   Emberstone came out and did my dryer vent cleaning + chimney inspection and sweep service, I was so surprised that they cover all of the raleigh/durham, nc area and yet were able to give me a prompt appointment date and show up to do an on-site quote in a very short amount of time.   Before a few months ago I’d never lived anywhere with a fireplace. Deciding to be on the safe side in my new home I scheduled to have a Emberstone come out to inspect and possibly sweep my chimney. When I called to schedule the appointment the gal I spoke with was very pleasant and informative, giving me fees and letting me know what to expect. Today Alex came out for the appointment.
